Who is Casey White?

Casey Cole White was awaiting trial on a capital crime when he was helped to escape from the Lauderdale County Jail in Alabama on April 29, 2022.

Because he was classified as highly dangerous, he was transferred to the Lauderdale County Detention Center in August 2020 to serve a 75-year sentence for multiple violent offenses.

While in custody, he confessed to another murder and was therefore transferred for further trial.

He allegedly confessed to an investigator in the 2015 murder of Connie Ridgeway, a 59-year-old resident of Rogersville, Alabama, in which she was stabbed to death.

He was subsequently charged with two counts of capital crime.

However, after his transfer, White retracted his confession and pleaded not guilty on the grounds of insanity.

Both staff and fellow inmates noticed that Casey was friendly and charming, especially when he wanted something.

“As a woman, you have to be very strong-willed to work in a prison with male inmates,” says field instructor Sergeant Renee Lewis in the documentary.

She recalled a time when Casey cheekily asked her for a hug, claiming it had been years since he had touched a woman.

Former police officer Joyce Brawly adds: “That’s a fine line that must not be crossed.

“You don’t want [the residents’] enemy, but they cannot be your friend.”

He was born on August 20, 1983 and already had a criminal record of at least ten years.

In 2012, he was sentenced to three years in prison for attacking his brother with the handle of an axe or sledgehammer.

In March 2016, he faced a 75-year prison sentence on seven charges, including attempted murder and robbery.

How did Casey White escape from prison?

On the morning of April 29, 2022 at 9:30 a.m., Vicky White, Deputy Warden of the Lauderdale County Jail, was observed escorting inmate Casey White to a police vehicle and exiting the facility.

Surveillance footage shows Casey in handcuffs and leg irons.

Vicky told her colleagues that she would take him to the district court for a psychological evaluation.

She also mentioned that she would see her doctor afterwards because she was feeling unwell.

The practice raised concerns among staff because protocol requires that inmates be accompanied by two deputy sheriffs when being transported to the courthouse.

It is believed that Vicky's senior position – she had already worked at the facility for 17 years – prevented any immediate challenge to her actions.

However, the couple never returned to the internment camp.

Shortly after their departure, the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department received surveillance video from a local gas station.

It showed Vicky's patrol car just eight minutes after they left the prison.

Officials noted that there were no hearings or evaluations scheduled at the courthouse that day, raising suspicions that Vicky may have been coerced into helping Casey escape.

This triggered a nationwide manhunt. The aim of the authorities was to safely track down Vicky and recapture Casey.

However, upon closer inspection, it became apparent that Vicky had a completely different side.

The correctional officer was once married, but that relationship ended in divorce.

In 2021, the 58-year-old confided to some of her colleagues that she was dating two men at the same time, one of whom she said was 20 years younger than her.

But beyond that, they did not know his identity.

Suspicions arose in the detention camp when residents noticed that Casey was handing Vicky letters with no address on the envelopes.

Vicky was supposed to retire the day she left with Casey, but she never finished the paperwork.

Before helping Casey escape, she sold her 4-acre property for $95,550, significantly less than the property's assessed value of $235,600.

She had also purchased several items, including firearms, men's clothing and vehicles.

Vicky told some colleagues that she was going to leave with a bang.

They didn't know what she meant, but the details became clear on her last day of work.

At 6 feet 1 inch tall, White towered over the shower curtain and could see Vicky White.

Officials discovered that Vicky was giving Casey special treatment, such as extra food and privileges.

The guards observed Casey's attempts to gain the staff's sympathy.

This preference eventually developed into a romantic relationship that may begin in 2020.

Following these revelations, Vicky's employment was terminated and arrest warrants were issued on May 2 and 6, 2022 for aiding and abetting Casey's escape.

The manhunt for Casey and Vicky was expanded nationwide after their Ford Edge was abandoned in Tennessee.

They switched to a blue 2006 Ford F-150 and stayed in various motels.

In Evansville, Indiana, they paid a homeless man to book a motel room for them.

The couple was seen washing the truck and later driving a gray Cadillac.

After a chase, her vehicle overturned, which led to her arrest.

Vicky suffered a fatal self-inflicted gunshot wound and died in hospital.

Casey surrendered without incident.

A reward of $5,000 was offered to an anonymous informant who helped in their capture.

On July 11, Casey was charged with first-degree murder of Vicky.

In May 2023, the defendant entered into a plea agreement in which he pleaded guilty to first-degree prison escape.

In return, he would not be tried or executed for her willful murder.
