SEOUL, September 10 (Korea Bizwire) – Parents who have at least 30 million won ($22,336) in unpaid child support or who default on such payments three or more times face penalties such as bans on overseas travel and revocation of driver's licenses, the Ministry of Gender Affairs said on Tuesday.

Such punitive measures became possible as the Cabinet on Tuesday approved a revision of the enforcement regulation of the Child Support Enforcement and Assistance Payment Act. The law, revised in March, is set to come into force on September 27.

Under the revised law, non-custodial parents who continue to neglect to pay child support will face immediate disciplinary action, such as disclosure of their identity, travel bans and revocation of their driver's license, upon order of the court.

The Gender Affairs Ministry expects the number of people affected by such disciplinary measures to increase when the revised law comes into force later this month, and the time spent in disciplinary proceedings will be shortened due to the simplified procedure.
