Massive protest erupts after 21-year-old IIT Guwahati student found dead in hostel room | Indiablooms

Guwahati/IBNS: A 21-year-old student of the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (IIT-G) was found dead in his hostel room, sparking massive protests on campus, according to media reports.

This is already the fourth student death at this renowned institute this year.

The death sparked protests from students who question the effectiveness of the institute's mental health and social care systems.

The body of the student, who hails from Uttar Pradesh, has been sent to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for an autopsy.

“It is with deep sadness that IITG announces the loss of a student from our community. We extend our deepest condolences to the student's family, friends and loved ones during this difficult time,” said a spokesperson for the institute.

“We encourage our student community to leverage our support networks. IITG reaffirms its commitment to providing a supportive and safe environment for all students,” the spokesperson added.

The investigation into this case is ongoing, a police official said.
