EL lawyer in court for theft of RAF funds

Delivered

The Hawks in the Eastern Cape said an EC lawyer appeared in court on Monday over the alleged theft of Road Accident Fund funds intended for clients.

Hawks provincial spokesman Captain Yolisa Mgolodela said 41-year-old Masixole Bangiso was arrested by the Hawks in the early hours of Monday.

She said it was alleged that Bangiso had failed to pay more than R500,000 to a customer who was involved in a car accident in Fitzpatrick Street, east London, in April 2021.

Mgolodela said the client was hospitalised for five weeks due to the severity of her injuries and a claim was later made to the RAF on her behalf but was not paid out.

She said the Hawks' investigation had revealed that the money Bangiso had told his client was her payment to the RAF was in fact a payout to another client, thereby “disadvantaging” the RAF by an amount of R1 million.

Mgolodela said Bangiso was granted bail of R4,000 and the case was remanded to October 11.
