Shiv Sena MP (UBT) Sanjay Raut on Tuesday said Devendra Fadnavis was not suitable to head the Maharashtra Home Ministry. The attack came a day after an accident involving a luxury car belonging to the son of BJP state president Chandrashekhar Bawankule.

Speaking to reporters here, Raut alleged that evidence had been removed in the case and that there would be no fair investigation into the cases in the state as long as BJP leader Fadnavis remains the Home Minister.

Bawankule's son Sanket's Audi collided with several vehicles in Nagpur's Ramdaspeth area in the early hours of Monday, after which the driver and another passenger were arrested by the police.

The occupants of the luxury car were returning from a beer bar in Dharampeth area when the incident occurred, a police official said on Monday, adding that blood tests to detect alcohol would also be conducted as part of the medical examination.

“A case of reckless driving and other offences has been registered. No action has been taken so far against Sanket Bawankule and the two other occupants, who reportedly fled from the scene at Mankapur Bridge,” the official said.

Raut attacked Fadnavis over the case on Tuesday.

“As per our information, BJP state president Chandrashekhar Bawankule's son was drunk and seriously injured two persons in Nagpur. Surprisingly, his name was not mentioned in the First Information Report (FIR) and the number plate of the car was removed after the accident,” he claimed.

If Devendra Fadnavis, who also hails from Nagpur, fails to run the Home Ministry effectively, then he is not suitable for such a position, said the Rajya Sabha member.

“The car is registered in Bawankule’s name, but all evidence has been removed,” Raut claimed.

“As long as Fadnavis is the Home Minister and Rashmi Shukla is the Director General of Police, there will never be a fair investigation into any matter in this state,” he added.

According to an officer from the Sitabuldi police station in Nagpur, the Audi collided first with the car of the plaintiff, Jitendra Sonkamble, and then with a moped at 1 a.m. on Monday. Two of the young people who were riding in it were injured.

“The Audi collided with several other vehicles heading towards Mankapur. At the T-Point there, the vehicle collided with a Polo. The occupants of the Polo chased the Audi and stopped it near the Mankapur bridge. Two occupants, identified as the drivers Arjun Hawre and Ronit Chittamwar, were stopped by the occupants of the Polo,” he said.

After the incident, Chandrashekhar Bawankule admitted that the Audi was registered in the name of his son Sanket.

“The police should investigate the accident thoroughly and impartially without bias. The culprits should be booked and appropriate action taken against them. I have not spoken to any police officer. The law must be the same for all,” the senior BJP politician said.
