Sacramento man arrested after stabbing on Amtrak train. A passerby stopped him, police say

Authorities in Solano County arrested a Sacramento man Sunday evening on suspicion of stabbing a man multiple times on an Amtrak Capitol Corridor train that made an emergency stop in Fairfield.

An Amtrak train conductor called dispatch around 10:30 p.m. to report a stabbing and said the train was stopping at the Fairfield-Vacaville station in Fairfield, Fairfield police said in a news release.

Officers began evacuating passengers when the train arrived and began searching for the suspect, the news release said.

During the search, officers found a 21-year-old man with two stab wounds to the chest. He was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, police said.

Officers also encountered a man with a knife, but realized he was a victim. The man managed to fight off the suspect and “bravely held him at bay” until help arrived, the release said.

The suspect's motive is unclear, Fairfield police said. The investigation is ongoing.

The suspect was taken into custody in Solano County and faces charges of attempted murder, false imprisonment and probation violation, police said.

It was unclear where the train was headed. Amtrak did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
