Driver 'lucky to be alive' after metal pin crashed through windshield on Interstate 93 in Meredith, New Hampshire | Video

MEREDITH, NH — A driver is lucky to be alive after a loose piece of metal flew into his windshield on a New Hampshire highway.

Lee Bavis said his son Hunter called him Friday night to tell him about the incident that occurred on Interstate 93 in Meredith, New Hampshire.

Video from a dashboard camera shows the metal falling off the back of a truck trailer driving in front of him, WMUR reported.

The piece was thrown at Hunter's truck at such speed that it pierced the thick glass and became lodged there.

“He’s lucky to be alive,” Bavis said.

Bavis said Hunter initially sounded a little disturbed on the phone.

“When I got to him 20 minutes later, he was pretty calm,” Bavis said. “I met him. He was able to drive the truck home, even though the locking pin was still in the windshield.”

He said he was proud of his son and how he responded to this frightening situation.

“He's pretty calm and composed. He's done quite well. He's done a wonderful job,” Bavis said.

He said if the piece of metal had flown faster and been in a different position, there could have been a different outcome.

“If he had fallen just a little bit differently, it would have made a huge difference. Thank God he's OK,” Bavis said.

Bavis said the other driver apologized and admitted it was just an accident.

But whether it was an accident or not, he said the accident was too close and could have been prevented.

“Secure your load on your trailers. Make sure all loose parts are secured. Things like this can happen, and they can happen quickly. The guy certainly didn't mean for this to happen. But it happens,” Bavis said.
