An Oklahoma family is mourning the loss of their two 2-year-old children who were found dead in a car after a caregiver allegedly forgot to drop them off at daycare last week.

Local KFOR reported that officers conducting a welfare check found two-year-old twins Ariel and Avery unconscious in a car stopped on a street in a neighborhood outside Norman, Oklahoma.

Marshall Suter, the girls' father, spoke to KFOR and said a trusted family member was supposed to drop the girls off but forgot.

“They were the best girls the world has ever seen. It honestly hurts because the girls were so loved and cared for,” Suter told the outlet.

KFOR reported that another family member described the incident as “truly tragic” and that it had “placed a great burden on the family.”

“I hope this at least shows people that it was not intentional and it really was an accident,” the family member told the outlet. “This family just wants some peace during this difficult and hard time.”

One of Suter's cousins set up a GoFundMe fundraiser to help the family pay for funeral expenses, saying the tragic news last Thursday was “the most traumatic news a parent can ever receive.”

“No one really knows how painful it is to lose a child until you go through it yourself,” the fundraiser states. “I know this mother and father are going through this. We would be so grateful for any help we receive and may God bless you all for your kindness.”

A statement from Norman police said the two toddlers were “already dead by the time officers arrived at the scene.” Police said it appeared the twin girls were “accidentally left in the vehicle for an extended period of time” before a family member found them.

“The coroner will determine the cause of death,” the police statement said. “The investigation into the incident is ongoing.”
