According to government spokesman Isaac Mwaura, all 164 boys living in a dormitory at Hillside Endarasha Academy in Nyeri that caught fire on Thursday evening were rescued.

In a statement on Monday, September 9, Mwaura confirmed that the school accommodates a total of 330 boarders – 166 girls and 164 boys. All the girls have been picked up by their parents and are currently at home.

Tragically, 19 students died on the scene, while two others succumbed to their injuries during treatment in hospital.

“The parents of the 19 students who died have not yet identified their children. They will be taken to Naromoru for autopsy and examination. They will also be provided with mental health and psychosocial support,” Mwaura said in a statement.

However, some parents say they are still looking for their children.

In addition, Mwaura said that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and government pathologist Johansen Oduor were conducting investigations and scientific analysis.

“Although the cause of the fire has not yet been conclusively determined, the government confirms that it has mobilized all relevant authorities and continues to work diligently on a thorough investigation,” he said.
