Police say 4 people die in plane crash in Vermont

According to police, four people were killed in a plane crash in a wooded area in Vermont on Sunday.

The plane left Windham Airport in Connecticut around 8:30 p.m. on Sept. 8 and flew nearly two hours to Basin Harbor Airport in Ferrisburg, Vermont State Police said.

After the plane landed in Vermont, the passengers arrived at their brunch reservations in Basin Harbor, state police said. They then left the restaurant shortly after noon and planned to fly back to Connecticut. A witness said the plane was on the runway at about 12:15 p.m.

There were no reports of an emergency or the plane crashing, police said. However, after the plane failed to return to Connecticut, relatives of the passengers contacted Connecticut State Police and the Middletown Police Department in Connecticut.

Both agencies worked with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and used cell phone location data to determine the plane's last known location near the runway in Vermont, police added.

At about 10:20 p.m. Sunday, Middletown police notified Vermont State Police of the plane's last location. A drone flown by Middlebury police found the plane's wreckage at about 12:20 a.m. Monday in a wooded area east of Basin Harbor Airport, police said.

When first responders arrived, all four passengers were dead.

Police said autopsies are being conducted to determine the cause and manner of death. Authorities have not released the names of those involved.
