Stunt driving in Ontario: What drivers should know

In Kawartha Lakes, officers stopped a vehicle that was allegedly driving more than 50 kilometers too fast and sentenced the driver to a long license suspension.

According to provincial police, the vehicle was traveling at 134 kilometers per hour on Highway 35 on Saturday evening, a road where the speed limit is 80 km/h.

The driver was charged with reckless driving and the vehicle was subsequently towed to the holding facility where it will remain for 14 days at the owner's expense.

In this case, the police also discovered that the driver had already driven without a license twice.

A charge of reckless driving is brought when a motorist is caught driving 40 km/h or more over the speed limit on roads with a posted speed limit of less than 80 km/h, or driving 50 km/h or more over the speed limit on roads with a posted speed limit of 80 km/h or more.

However, stunt driving also includes drivers who prevent others from overtaking safely, cut off another vehicle or intentionally drive too close to another vehicle.

A charge of reckless driving automatically results in an immediate license suspension for 30 days and a 14-day roadside impoundment of the vehicle.

If convicted of reckless driving, you face a fine of at least $2,000 to $10,000 and six penalty points.
