As a police spokesman reported on Monday, the crash occurred late Sunday afternoon in the Frankfurt district of Sachsenhausen. A 22-year-old man was driving his high-horsepower VW Golf GTI on Babenhäuser Straße towards the city.

On the straight, two-lane stretch of road, he was apparently tempted to drive faster than the specified 50 km/h and attempted an overtaking maneuver at around 5 p.m. near a bus turnaround loop.

However, when changing to the right lane, the man lost control of his car for reasons that are still unclear and rushed onto the grass verge, where he mowed down a traffic sign.

Shortly afterwards, he crashed into a tree with virtually no braking. The impact was so violent that the Golf was not only literally torn to pieces, but the gearbox and the entire engine block were ripped out of the body.

The 22-year-old suffered serious injuries but survived. After receiving first aid, he was taken to hospital where he was admitted as an inpatient. However, his injuries were not life-threatening, the police said.

The Babenhäuser Landstraße was closed for several hours heading into the city. However, traffic could be diverted via the Hainer Weg bus stop, which runs parallel to it.

The investigation into the cause of the accident and other background details is still ongoing.
