Peter Nygard sentenced to eleven years in prison for sexual assault

TORONTO – Former fashion mogul Peter Nygard has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for his sexual assault convictions in Toronto.

Taking into account the time already spent in custody, his sentence will be 6.7 years.

Nygard's lawyer had called for a six-year prison sentence, citing the 83-year-old's age and poor health, while prosecutors called for a 15-year prison sentence.

Nygard was found guilty of four counts of sexual assault last November, but was acquitted of the fifth count and one count of false imprisonment.

The charges are based on allegations dating from the 1980s to the mid-2000s, when several women accused Nygard of sexually harassing them at his company's headquarters in Toronto.

Nygard's lawyer had previously argued in court that a long prison sentence would be “overwhelming” for her client, who suffers from type 2 diabetes and failing eyesight, among other things.
