A man has appeared in court accused of stabbing a mother to death. The mother was attacked at the Notting Hill Carnival in front of her three-year-old daughter.

Shakiel Thibou, 20, was charged with the murder of Cher Maximen after she died of “unsurvivable” injuries on August 31.

The court heard that the 32-year-old victim had been with relatives and friends at the Notting Hill Carnival family day on Sunday, August 25, when she was stabbed in the leg in broad daylight.

Thibou appeared at the Old Bailey on Monday via videolink from Belmarsh Prison, while his brothers Sheldon Thibou, 24, and Shaeim Thibou, 21, appeared via videolink from Wandsworth Prison to face lesser charges.

Prosecutor Alistair Richardson told the court that a fight had broken out between the brothers near Cher and her group.

Shakiel attempted to stab a man near Ms Maximen with a “large machete-like knife”, the court heard.

Cher tried to intervene and was stabbed in the groin area, Richardson said.

She suffered cardiac arrest and was admitted to hospital where she underwent two major surgeries.

He said: “In summary, it was found that she had significant injuries and severe blood loss,” the prosecutor said.

“These injuries proved to be unsurvivable.”

A woman who was stabbed at the Notting Hill Carnival has sadly died. Just before 6pm on Sunday 25 August, officers responding to the carnival operation in Golborne Road, W10, were alerted to a woman who had been stabbed. Officers provided emergency medical attention until paramedics arrived. The woman, later identified as 32-year-old Cher Maximen, was taken to hospital in a critical condition. Despite the best efforts of medical staff, Cher died on the morning of Saturday 31 August. Realising the severity of her injuries, detectives from the Met's Specialist Crime Command took over the investigation in the hours following Cher's stabbing attack. On Tuesday morning they arrested Shakiel Thibou, 20 (29/05/2004) of Masbro Road, W12.

Police rushed to the scene and ordered him to “drop the knife,” but the attack continued, they said.

Mr Richardson added: “Shakiel fell on top of Cher and Cher kicked him, with the large machete-like knife clearly visible.”

“Then Shakiel stabbed Cher in the groin and she collapsed.”

Following the horror, numerous condolences poured in for Cher, including from her devastated family.

One said: “Cher was beautiful inside and out. She has a big family and lots of friends.”

“She was a good mother and protector of her family and close friends.”

A GoFundMe campaign to help Cher's daughter and raise money for her funeral has reached more than £13,000.

Organizer Yasmin Joseph said: “Cher was enjoying a fun day with her beloved three-year-old daughter when her life was ended by a senseless act of violence.”

“In light of this heartbreaking loss, we have created this GoFundMe page to raise funds for Cher's funeral as well as necessary financial and therapeutic support for Cher's daughter, who now faces a future without her mother.

“This little girl deserves all the love and care we can give her during this incredibly difficult time.

“Cher was not just a mother; she was a shining example in her community and was known for her warmth and kindness.”

“Her smile brought joy to many and her legacy will live on in her daughter.”

“Together we can help ensure this young girl has the resources she needs to grow up in a climate of love, support and opportunity.”

Shakiel, of Masbro Road in Hammersmith, west London, is also charged with possession of a knife in a public place and violent disorder.

Sheldon, of Star Road in Hammersmith, and Shaeim, of Charleville Road in Fulham, south-west London, are both charged with violent disorder and assault on a paramedic. The former also faces charges of possession of a stun gun.

The three defendants were remanded in custody pending a plea and trial preparation hearing at the same court on 28 November.

The provisional trial date has been set for February 24 next year.
