WSU quarterback John Mateer raves about the Cougars’ offense: “We are simply too versatile”

The Washington State Cougars have built a reputation for their passing attack over the past decade, but after their 37-16 win over Texas Tech last weekend, quarterback John Mateer and his team appear to have added another dimension to that offense.

Mateer set a Washington State quarterback record on Saturday by rushing for 197 yards and scoring a touchdown. The Cougars totaled 301 yards on the ground, with Wayshawn Parker and Djouvensky Schlenbaker contributing significantly.

“They kept throwing eight [in coverage]you know. So we just let the ball run and it worked and the O-Line took care of it,” Mateer said after the game

Mateer also praised the play of his offensive line, which paved the way for the Cougars' success.

“Man, they're good. Honestly, our O-line is very good… They got going, man, and started believing in each other and supporting each other, and that's good. It's helped.”

Washington State's toughest matchups are yet to come as the season progresses. The Washington Huskies host the Cougars this week at Lumen Field in Seattle. The Huskies have allowed 3.1 yards per carry and 3.8 yards per pass attempt in their first two matchups of the season. The Cougars may need to keep them guessing to gain the upper hand.

Mateer believes his team can at least adapt on offense after Saturday's performance.

“We're just very versatile, and it's not just me. I keep saying it, the O-line is good and they go at it damn hard and they love to do that and that helps, man. I don't think you can drop eight points on us anymore. We're just too versatile, right? And then when you stop dropping eight points, we start throwing them around. I'm just very confident in this offense.”
