Billie Lourd on “The Last Showgirl,” Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher

In her latest film, Billie Lourd drew personal inspiration from to create a beautiful mother-daughter story.

During the film’s world premiere on Friday at the Toronto International Film Festival, Last Showgirl The actress explained that her role in the film with Gia Coppola reminded her of her late mother Carrie Fisher and her grandmother Debbie Reynolds.

“It's so weird, a movie about Vegas and mothers and daughters… could I relate to that? 100 percent,” Lourd told People. “That's why I fell in love with it.”

She continued, “When Gia first sent me the script, I was so excited to be a part of it because it reminded me so much of my mother and grandmother. My grandmother was a showgirl herself and my mother was kind of the character that I got to play. So it was really cathartic and incredible to be in this movie and play this role. It was really cool.”

Fisher died on December 27, 2016, at the age of 60, after suffering cardiac arrest on a flight from London to Los Angeles. Reynolds died the next day at the age of 84 from complications of a stroke.

Written by Kate Gersten, The Last Showgirl Pamela Anderson plays Shelley, a Las Vegas dancer who finds herself at a frightening crossroads when her show is canceled after 38 years and she is told she is too old to be on a new show. In the meantime, she tries to reconnect with her daughter Hannah (Lourd) while maintaining the other relationships in her life and planning her future.

Jamie Lee Curtis, Kiernan Shipka, Dave Bautista, Brenda Song and Jason Schwartzman also star in the film. The film was produced by Schwartzman and Natalie Farrey. The film is currently looking for a distribution partner.
