Peter Nygard's sexual assault verdict expected today

Former fashion mogul Peter Nygard is scheduled to be sentenced today for his sexual assault convictions after the case dragged on for several months.

The 83-year-old was found guilty on four counts last November, but the sentencing process dragged on for several reasons, including Nygard's difficulty in finding legal representation.

The verdict was postponed again last month because one of the prosecutors was abroad.

Nygard's new lawyer is demanding a six-year prison sentence, citing her client's age and health problems, while prosecutors have asked for a 15-year prison sentence.

Nygard, who once ran a successful women's clothing company, was accused of sexually harassing several women at his company's Toronto headquarters from the 1980s to the mid-2000s.

He was ultimately found guilty of four counts of sexual assault, but acquitted of the fifth count and one count of false imprisonment.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published September 9, 2024.
