Gabby Logan interrupted coverage of the Great North Run to deliver a tragic BBC news story

Gabby Logan interrupted coverage of the Great North Run to announce the sad death of a former race participant.

After hosting the Olympics this summer, Logan returned to our screens to host the BBC's broadcast of the Great North Run from Tyneside on Sunday.

The BBC began its coverage with a montage of highlights from the past 43 years, including Mo Farah's Great North Run and Claire Lomas completing the 2016 race in a bionic suit.

Lomas, 44, was paralyzed from the chest down when she was thrown from her horse 17 years ago.

Despite her life-changing injuries, she still took part in the race and even completed the Great North Run in 2016 in a bionic suit.

But she died in a tragic accident in Jordan on August 22 that no one knew about. Logan interrupted coverage of the Great North Run to deliver the news and pay tribute to her, calling her an “incredible inspiration.”

The BBC presenter said: “You may have recognised Claire Lomas in the bionic suit she wore at the Great North Run after being paralysed in her sport, eventing.

“Well, I bring you very sad news: Claire died in an accident in Jordan a few days ago.

“And later we will pay tribute to this incredible, inspirational woman together with Sir Brendan Foster.

“Of course, it is people like Claire who have gotten so many of these thousands here off their sofas and inspired them to get moving.”

On X, the Great Run wrote: “We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of inspirational fundraiser Claire Lomas MBE.

“Claire made history as the first person in the UK to walk wearing a bionic ReWalk suit, inspiring runners across the UK and beyond.

“Over the last decade, Claire, along with her dedicated support team, has taken part in many Great Run Series events, raising almost £1 million for charity as part of an incredible fundraising campaign.”
