Lucy Letby's supporter attacks medical witness who helped convict evil serial killer: Police launch assault investigation as 'sick' campaign to free her from prison turns hostile

A campaign to free baby murderer Lucy Letby has turned into hostility: a medical witness is said to have been physically attacked by a “pro-Letby” activist.

Neonatal nurse Letby, 34, is serving a 15-year prison sentence after being found guilty of the murder of seven newborn babies and the attempted murder of six more babies at the Countess of Chester Hospital.

Nevertheless, some campaigns are calling for her release, as activists believe that the nurse's conviction for killing the babies is unjustified.

Her parents, Susan and John Letby, are actively hoping for an overturning of what they believe to be “the biggest miscarriage of justice in British legal history,” sources said.

A medical witness testifying on behalf of the prosecution said he was physically attacked last week by a citizen with “pro-Letby views,” the Sunday Times first reported.

The witness said he has since reported the attack to Cheshire Police, who confirmed that an investigation is ongoing.

Meanwhile, another medical witness stated that they are considering forwarding a series of messages to the police via social media.

Health Minister Wes Streeting described the calls for Letby’s release as “crass and insensitive”.

He said the public should continue to view the former nurse as a murderer, even as calls for her release grow louder.

When asked about the row by LBC's Lewis Goodall, Streeting said: “It is crass and insensitive to conduct a public campaign like this. Because we can debate it, you and I, the audience can debate it, we can read the newspapers.”

“We are not the Criminal Case Review Board. We have an independent judiciary in this country, and I think we have a fair and successful independent judiciary in this country.”

Letby's parents' call for a review of the convictions has outraged the parents of two babies who targeted the serial killer, who worked at the Countess of Chester Hospital in Cheshire.

Baby E was murdered by Letby after she caused an internal hemorrhage and injected the baby with air. Baby F was one of the survivors of Letby's murder attempts, despite being poisoned with insulin.

The parents of the twins, whose mother gave birth following several IVF attempts after being told she could not have children, have hit out at those who claim their children were not assaulted by the nurse.

They sat throughout the trial and criticized the activists who, they said, were not present in court to hear all the evidence.

Some of the signatories of open letters calling for a review of Letby's convictions also refused to reveal their names, arguing that doing so would jeopardize their careers.
