Teacher killed in Georgia school shooting brought cake to celebrate birthday with students, family says

WINDER, Georgia (WANF/Gray News) – Apalachee High School math teacher Cristina Irimie was celebrating her birthday with her students the day she and others were killed in a mass shooting.

Irimie had big plans for her children on that tragic day.

The evening before, she had baked her students a cake for their birthday because she wanted to celebrate with them, WANF reported.

Irimie was killed Wednesday after 14-year-old Colt Gray opened fire, killing football coach Richard Aspinwall and students Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, according to police.

Nine other people were also injured.

“Her husband wanted the world to know that she was a woman with a big heart and a good soul,” said Gabrielle Buth, a relative of Irimie.

Buth said one way to honor Cristina Irimie's life is to continue to love and invest in children around the world.

“She died trying to save a student. That at least proves how much she loves him,” Buth said.
