Drama at the Paralympics Marathon: Runner disqualified two metres from the finish

Tragic end to the women's marathon at the Paralympics: Elena Congost from Spain had already celebrated her bronze medal when a scene just two meters from the finish line proved fatal. Congost was disqualified and stripped of her bronze.

“It's a shame to take this medal away from her”: The horror over the Paralympics decision against runner Elena Congost (36) is not only evident in numerous posts on social media. The athlete herself has also reacted with dismay to her disqualification in the Paralympic marathon.

The Spaniard was briefly able to celebrate her bronze medal on Sunday (September 8, 2024), but then a scene just two meters from the finish line shattered her dreams of a podium finish. “They didn't disqualify me because of an infringement, but because I'm human,” said Congost bitterly.

Elena Congost stripped of Paralympics medal

She had previously taken third place in the long-distance discipline, with a lead of over three minutes over fourth-placed Misato Michishita (47). Disaster struck just a few steps before the finish.

Because Congost is visually impaired, she runs her race with a guide who is connected to her via an elastic band. Runner Mia Carol Bruguera accompanies her during her race and sets the course as a supporter.

Article 7.9.5 of the rules states that athletes are not allowed to let go of the connecting rope at any time during the competition.

Congost did just that for a moment. She instinctively grabbed at her stumbling guide, who was threatening to fall to the ground in painful cramps. The tape slipped out of her hand for a moment. A violation of the rules, which allow no leeway.

At the finish, she said in tears: “It was a reflex that comes out of you when someone falls to the ground.” She was “devastated because I had the medal.” She said of the disqualification: “They told me that I let go of the ribbon for a second. And that's why there's no turning back now.”

After crossing the finish line, the Spanish duo initially cheered, and Bruguera even carried the relieved Congost through the finish area on her hands. Shortly afterwards, the bitter news followed, which also caused horror at home.

“The judges can surely sleep well tonight after disqualifying an athlete from the Paralympics after she showed concern for her guide,” wrote one user. “This has nothing to do with sporting values.” “No matter what the rules say,” added another user resignedly.

After gold in Rio 2016 and silver in London 2012, the Congolese seemed to have already won a whole range of medals. But instead of precious metal, she is now taking home the most bitter defeat of her career from Paris.
