Security forces fired several rounds of tear gas shells to disperse the protesters, who had staged a rally against the recent drone attacks in Manipur on Sunday evening and had reached as far as the Raj Bhavan and the Chief Minister's bungalows in Imphal.

Thousands of people marched for over three kilometers along Tiddim Road and were moving towards the high security zone when police stopped them.

A contingent of state and central security forces erected barricades on the road to prevent anyone from moving forward. They also fired tear gas shells to disperse the protesters.

The place is close to the police headquarters, the state secretariat and the BJP office.

The protesters sat on the street in Keisampat and shouted slogans condemning recent drone attacks by suspected insurgents and the authorities' inability to arrest those involved in the incidents.

They shouted slogans and demanded the dismissal of the Director General of the State Police because he allegedly failed to prevent the drone attacks.

The use of the remote-controlled small aircraft as a weapon was first observed in Manipur on September 1 in the village of Koutruk in the Imphal West district. Two people were killed and nine others injured in the attack, which also involved the use of firearms.

The next day, drones were used again in Senjam Chirang, about three kilometers away, injuring three people.
