Coeymans man arrested for assaulting officers while drunk

The Albany County Sheriff's Office arrested Thomas J. Mason Jr., 31, of Coeymans, on a number of charges, including assault, stemming from a disturbance in Coeymans that occurred Saturday.

Authorities said they received a report of an active disturbance on Main Street in Coeymans around 8:15 a.m.

When officers arrived, they observed Mason Jr. on the street, who immediately became aggressive toward officers and showed signs of intoxication.

Sheriff Craig Apple said officers attempted to arrest him as part of the investigation, but he was combative toward authorities.

This ultimately led to about twenty people close to the officers trying to prevent the arrest, the sheriff's office said.

Apple stated that due to Mason Jr.'s combative behavior, several officers sustained injuries during his arrest.

Other juveniles were taken into custody for their involvement in the arrest, the sheriff's office said.

Mason Jr. was charged with second-degree assault, second-degree obstruction of public order and resisting arrest.

In addition, a male juvenile who hindered the apprehension of Mason Jr. was arrested and charged with the same charges as Mason Jr. The juvenile was issued summonses and is scheduled to appear before the Albany County Probation Department at 10 a.m. on September 18.

Mason Jr. was arraigned in Coeymans Municipal Court and remanded to the Albany County Correctional Facility in lieu of $60,000 bail or $80,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in Coeymans Municipal Court again on September 19 at 9 a.m.

The sheriff's office says it was assisted by the New York State Police, Coeymans Police, Greene County Sheriff's Office and Coxsackie Police.
