Supporters of Imran Khan demand his release and clash with Pakistani police during a party rally

Supporters of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan clashed with police during a Pakistan Movement for Justice (PTI) rally in Islamabad on Sunday.

The party claimed that Islamabad police “heavily fired at peaceful Pakistanis” during the rally demanding Khan's immediate release from prison.

Imran Khan was due to leave prison this week after a local court held up appeals against his conviction in the Iddat case.

However, according to a report by Dawn, the former captain of the Pakistan national cricket team was arrested moments later by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in the Toshakhana case.

At the PTI rally on Sunday, party leader Hammad Azhar addressed the crowd and said they had gathered to establish “the rule of law and the supremacy of the constitution” in the country, the report added.

Imran Khan, a 71-year-old former cricketer and politician, was arrested on August 5 last year. He was initially detained in Attock Jail and then transferred to Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi. He faces over 200 cases and has already been convicted in some of them.
