Portugal vs Scotland – LIVE!

Portugal face Scotland in the Nations League tonight in what is another big test for Steve Clarke's side. The Tartan Army started life after a hugely disappointing Euro 2024 campaign with an agonising defeat to Poland on Thursday, conceding a late defeat at Hampden Park despite having previously overturned a two-goal deficit. Things won't get any easier for the Scots tonight, with Clarke under pressure to prove he can still motivate this group of players.

The hosts, meanwhile, bounced back from their European Championship quarter-final defeat to beat Croatia. Cristiano Ronaldo, who faced much criticism for failing to score in Germany over the summer, scored the 900th goal of his remarkable career in the win.

Ronaldo will no doubt fancy his chances in Lisbon tonight. Scotland have had a terrible spell since qualifying for the European Championships and face major challenges. Follow all the action LIVE with Standard Sport's dedicated match blog!

It is difficult to imagine an out-of-form Scottish side, with such a run of bad luck and low on confidence, being able to stop this star-studded Portuguese side away from home, especially with Ronaldo once again on top form.

The hosts will then likely be looking at a comfortable win in Lisbon, and after the disappointing performance at Euro 2024, Clarke has a lot to ponder ahead of the further games against Croatia and Portugal in October.

Torino striker Che Adams withdrew from Scotland's squad ahead of the match against Poland, as did Celtic duo James Forrest and Greg Taylor and Kilmarnock goalkeeper Robby McCrorie.

Dundee's Jon McCracken was called up instead, while Rangers midfielder Connor Barron and Sassuolo's Josh Doig were also included in the squad. Lyndon Dykes returned from injury, as did Ryan Gauld and Ben Doak, who both made their senior debuts as substitutes at Hampden.

Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney remains out with a thigh injury sustained at the Euros and Celtic captain Callum McGregor retired from international football last month. Out-of-contract Stuart Armstrong, Liam Cooper and Ryan Jack are among the other absentees from Steve Clarke's squad.
