Man who escaped from Texas prison arrested after car theft in Calallen

A Texas inmate who escaped from the Huntsville Unit was captured in Calallen, Texas, on Sunday after a nationwide manhunt. The inmate escaped from the maximum security prison earlier that day, prompting authorities to issue warnings and launch a large-scale manhunt.

Jesus Villarreal, 39, went missing from prison early this morning. Authorities believe he escaped in a maroon Chevrolet Malibu stolen from a nearby convenience store.

Villarreal was serving a 63-year prison sentence for multiple violent crimes, including four counts of aggravated robbery and two counts of aggravated assault outside of Cameron County. He also faced charges of possession of a deadly weapon while in prison since 2015.

Villarreal now faces additional charges related to his escape, adding to his already lengthy prison sentence.

Officials thanked law enforcement for their quick response and efforts in bringing Villarreal back into custody. Anyone with additional information should contact the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
