A man has appeared in court accused of carrying out an attack outside a cafe in Cork city centre.

Aaron Bohane (24), of St. Vincent's Hostel in Cork city, appeared before Cork District Court charged with assaulting Gavin Sheehan in Oliver Plunkett Street last Friday.

He was also accused of manufacturing an object that could cause serious injury.

Giving evidence of the arrest, charge and caution, Garda Joe Crowley told Judge Philip O'Leary that he arrested Mr Bohane at 9.40am on Saturday. He said Mr Bohane did not respond when subsequently charged with two offences.

Defence lawyer Elaine Audley said there was no application for bail. However, Mr Bohane reserved his opinion on his bail application.

Because Mr Bohane is unemployed, he was granted free legal aid. Judge O'Leary remanded Mr Bohane in custody to appear before Cork District Court via videolink on Wednesday.

No direct evidence of the incident was presented. The alleged assault occurred outside a cafe on the junction of Oliver Plunkett Street and Grand Parade shortly after 5pm on Friday.

The injured man was taken to Cork University Hospital for treatment. He has since been discharged from hospital.
