The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) will begin identifying the bodies of the students killed in the Hillside Endarasha Academy dormitory fire on Monday.

According to Nyeri County Commissioner Pius Murugu, the bodies are at Naromoru Level 4 Hospital and the identification process will begin on Monday.

Murugu said the DCI would preside over the process, which he described as lengthy and arduous as the bodies were burnt beyond recognition.

“There are many more students missing but this process will begin tomorrow in Naromoru. It will be a long process and we hope it will be completed soon,” Murugu said.

He also announced that the government would pay all the medical bills of the students admitted to the various hospitals and would also take care of the farewell of the deceased.

Murugu also said that they would convene a meeting with the Ministry of Education to reopen the school as soon as possible as national examinations are scheduled this semester.

“Even though the boarding portion is delayed, day school classes will continue while we make plans for the boarding portion,” he added.

While the cause of the fire at Hillside Endarasha Academy in Nyeri County remains unclear, Citizen TV has received information that the deadly fire, which resulted in the deaths of 21 students, may have been caused by an electrical fault.

In an interview with one of the parents whose son survived the tragedy and who wishes to remain anonymous, it all began near the main entrance, where students from grades 5 to 8 are housed.

The parent explained that sparks from a light bulb near the main door of the dorm may have caused the fire.

Prosecutors said they had ordered police to investigate whether the tragedy was caused by negligence or recklessness and announced that those found guilty would be brought to justice.

The flames engulfed the dormitory of a primary school in Nyeri district around midnight on Thursday, where more than 150 boys between the ages of 9 and 13 were sleeping.
