Tears flow as family of defendant in O'Reilly knife attack visits Edward Sackey's family

Tears flow in the family home of the late Edward Sackey

It was an emotional sight as the family of the accused in the O'Reilly knife attack visited the family of the deceased, Edward Borketey Sackey, to apologise and offer their condolences.

The tragic scene shows the mother of 18-year-old defendant Godwin in tears while the deceased's father, Edward Borketey Sackey, fought back tears.

The defendant's family, who should have visited the bereaved much earlier to express their condolences, have provided an explanation for their delay.

According to them, they only learned about Edward Sackey's family during the court proceedings from the Ghanaian police, while the O'Reilly school administration kept this information secret.

“The teachers did not inform us of the identity of the deceased family. We only learned their identity yesterday in court and this is very disappointing on the part of the teachers.”

However, the family of the deceased demands the presence of the head of the accused’s family.

“We believe that every family has a head, no matter what. In Ghana, there is no family without a head because as Africans, we believe that the man is the head of every family and there is no way you can go into a family where there is no male representative, no matter what.”

“The women cannot just come and say they are the only ones in the family. That is simply not possible. We want the male head of the family to come and talk to us because he is the one who can lead them as a family if something needs to be done,” a family representative told Accra-based GHONE TV.

Both families have since accused the school administration of negligence in this matter.

Meanwhile, the La La District Court has remanded the suspect in police custody for two weeks and adjourned the case to September 19, 2024.
