Israeli attack kills three Lebanese medics, Hezbollah strikes back

CAIRO – Three Lebanese medics were killed and two others injured, one seriously, in an Israeli attack as they extinguished fires in the southern town of Faroun, Lebanon's Health Ministry said Saturday.

“Israeli forces attacked a Lebanese Civil Defense team as it responded to fires sparked by recent Israeli airstrikes,” the ministry said in a statement, specifying that a fire truck was hit in the attack.

Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati condemned the Israeli attack as a violation of international law and announced an emergency meeting with Western ambassadors and international organizations for Monday to discuss the ongoing hostilities.

“To date, 25 paramedics from various rescue teams and two health workers have been killed and 94 paramedics and health workers have been injured due to Israel's aggression,” the Health Ministry statement continued.

The Ministry of Health also condemned the attack as a “blatant blow” against the official Lebanese state apparatus. It was the second attack of this kind on an emergency team within less than twelve hours.

The Israeli military said it was investigating the report.

The terrorist militia had previously stated that it had carried out a series of attacks on Hezbollah rocket launch sites and infrastructure in several locations in southern Lebanon after the group fired rockets at northern Israel.

Hezbollah said in a statement that in response to the attack on Faroun it fired a “squadron of rockets” targeting an Israeli military headquarters, causing casualties.

The intensity of the fighting between Hezbollah and Israel has steadily increased. Tens of thousands of people on both sides of the Lebanese-Israeli border have been forced to flee their homes.
