Regulatory authority: Code of conduct for social workers in Hong Kong to include provisions on national security

The Code of Conduct for Social Workers in Hong Kong will include provisions for protection national securitysaid the head of the professional regulatory body, with the organization checking the licenses of members linked to certain criminal cases.

Herman Hui Chung-shing, chairman of the Social Workers Registration Board, which oversees 27,000 professionals in the sector, said on Saturday the code of conduct will also include provisions strengthening the mechanism for dealing with people involved in national security or other serious criminal cases.

“We will incorporate the relevant provisions into the [code of conduct] as a reminder to social workers that they must behave in a way that preserves their professional dignity,” he said on a television program.

Beijing imposed the national security law on Hong Kong in 2020, with legislation targeting acts of secession, subversion, terrorism and collusion with foreign powers.

In July this year, the association underwent a controversial restructuring after authorities accused the regulator of not taking more decisive action against the registration of people convicted of national security offenses in the profession.
