All Blacks vs Springboks player ratings: 'Devastating' rookie shines in defeat: Planet Rugby

After their 18:12 defeat against the SpringboksHere are our ratings of the All Blacks players after a thrilling encounter in Cape Town.

All Blacks vs Springboks player ratings

15 Will Jordan: He appeared in various gaps on the pitch and always looked dangerous with the ball in his hands. He also showed some good defensive performances. Fitted well into the system at number 15. 6

14 Sevu Reece: Received an unnecessary yellow card in the first half for a clumsy foul on Willie le Roux, but made up for it with good work on both sides of the ball. 6

13 Rieko Ioane: He was fairly quiet in midfield but looked much more threatening on the wing. He was a real challenge on the flanks and made good use of the space he had there. He excelled on the wing early in his international career and looking at this performance, this could be a good option for him in the future. 7

12 Jordie Barrett: A solid performance for the most part. Took a lot of work off Damian McKenzie and linked up well with the likes of Will Jordan and Sevu Reece early on. Also handled the pressure well from Pieter-Steph du Toit, Siya Kolisi and Damian de Allende. 6

11 Mark Tele’a: He started the game shaky but got better and better. As expected, he looked for the ball and was able to carry it well on a few occasions. 6

10 Damian McKenzie: Looked much calmer for most of the game and pulled the strings well on the park. Despite his decent performance, his miss ultimately came back to haunt his team as the Springboks struck just minutes later with a crucial try. 6

9 Cortez Ratima: Consistent quick ball that gave the All Blacks attack some much needed momentum. He also combined well with McKenzie which gave him the freedom to play his own game. He also risked his body in the breakdown and got some nice ball wins as a result. 7

Back row

8 Ardie Savea: Quiet by his standards, he still managed to get his team over the winning line with some solid efforts. Like many others in the pack, he really botched the Springboks' collapse, which limited their playing options for the most part. 7

7 Sam Cane: As always, he let his blood flow in defence. He constantly threw himself into the breakdown and also delivered some powerful tackles. 7

6 Wallace Sititi: He had a tough task when he came on for the impressive Ethan Blackadder, but he lived up to his role with a great performance. He constantly tried to get his hands on the ball in attack and made some devastating runs as a result. He was also powerful in defence and looked to be a nuisance in the breakdown slowing down the Boks ball. 9

Barely five

5 Tupou Vaa'i: A busy move from the lock. Brought plenty of physicality to the proceedings with some solid involvements on both sides of the ball. 6

4 Scott Barrett: Was a consistent threat at the breakdown which played a big part in the All Blacks keeping the upper hand in that area. Added a solid platform at the lineout too. 6

Springboks player ratings: 'Titanic powerhouse' shines as Malcolm Marx seals victory over All Blacks with 'Blinder'

3 Tyrel Lomax: He had mixed luck in the scrum but looked really neat around the park, making some strong tackles and contributing to the attack with some lovely passes. However, things went awry at the end of the game as he picked up a yellow card which ultimately helped South Africa to finish the game. 5

2 Cody Taylor: He seemed to be back to his best for much of the game. He had to work hard in attack and was able to break through the Springboks' defence several times. He seemed to be back to his best. 8

1 Tamaiti Williams: He was better in the scrum than Malherbe and, like Lomax, was able to create some nice attacking moments with his skillful hands. 7

Substitute: The All Blacks bench delivered a mixed performance and again struggled to stop the South Africans' late forward movement.

TJ Perenara, Anton Lienert-Brown and Beauden Barrett brought new dynamism to the All Blacks attack, but unfortunately they faded as the Springboks regained the upper hand.

Despite their decent performances, the forwards on the bench failed to replicate their impact and were overwhelmed by the Bomb Squad. They could not match the physicality of players like Malcom Marx and Elrigh Louw, but more importantly, they did not come anywhere close to the level of the players they replaced.

Much of the attacking power was lost when Wallace Sititi was replaced and the same was true when Ofa Tu'ungafasi and Asafo Aumua were brought on for Tamaiti Williams and Codie Taylor. This is becoming a very serious problem for the All Blacks as this is the third time in this championship and the second time in a row that the substitutes have struggled to match their opponents in tight spaces. They may have to make some personnel changes if the problem is not addressed soon.
