Attack in Croatia: Bear bites walker in the arms

Wildlife conservation in the holiday country on the Adriatic does a lot to keep the bears away from people. If encounters with the large furry animals do occur, it can be dangerous.

A bear attacked a walker in the Croatian Plitvice Lakes National Park, 130 kilometers from Zagreb, and bit him in the arms. The 64-year-old man, a local resident, was taken to the hospital in the county capital Gospic, Croatian television HRT reported on its website. Doctors described his injuries as not serious.

Bear knocks man over – and bites

The incident occurred late Friday evening. According to HRT, the man who was attacked said he was walking about 800 meters from his house. The animal ran towards him from a pasture, knocked him over, bit him and then ran away again. The Plitvice Lakes National Park is a popular tourist destination with its picturesque waterfalls that connect the 16 lakes.

Bear attacks are very rare

There are around 1,000 brown bears living in the wild in Croatia. Croatian wildlife conservation tries to keep conflicts between bears and humans as low as possible through measures such as monitoring, public relations, bear-proof garbage cans and regulating the population by shooting. It is therefore quite rare for bears to attack humans in Croatia.
