Hathras:

The death toll in the bus accident that occurred here yesterday has risen to 17 after two children succumbed to their injuries during treatment, officials said on Saturday.

Sixteen people – 11 in Hathras and five in Aligarh – are still undergoing treatment, Hathras District Magistrate Ashish Kumar told PTI.

Appi (2) and Gulshan, about 12 years old, died during treatment at a hospital in Aligarh, officials said.

According to officials, 15 people, including four women and as many children, were killed in a van on National Highway 93 on Friday when a bus rammed the vehicle from behind.

“The bus collided with the van while trying to overtake it on the Agra-Aligarh national highway,” said police commissioner Nipun Agarwal.

The accident occurred near the village of Kanwarpur, about 10 kilometers from the district headquarters.

The passengers were on their way from Hathras to Agra.

Agarwal also said that a case has been initiated in the matter and arrests will be made as soon as possible.

Salam Mohammad, a relative of some of those killed, said the accident occurred when some of his family members were returning home to Agra after attending a 'chaalisvaa' (mourning ritual) in the Sasni area.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath instructed district officials to arrive at the site on Friday and take care of relief efforts.

He also ordered that the families of those killed be given financial support of Rs 200,000 each and those seriously injured be given Rs 50,000 each.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to the victims of the accident and wished a speedy recovery to the injured. The local administration is providing all possible assistance to the victims under the supervision of the state government, he said on 10 May.

Modi announced compensation of Rs 200,000 each for the families of those killed and Rs 50,000 for the injured.

President Droupadi Murmu expressed his condolences to the victims of the accident and prayed for a speedy recovery for the injured.

“The news of the death of several people in a road accident in Hathras district of Uttar Pradesh is extremely sad. I convey my deepest condolences to the bereaved families who have lost their loved ones and pray for a speedy recovery to the injured,” Murmu said in a Hindi post on X.
