New report calls for improved access to public services for New York families

A new report from The Children's Agenda, EdTrust-NY and Raising New York underscores the need for more accessible public social programs in New York. The report surveyed 50 families with young children in Monroe County and revealed challenges such as confusing applications and long wait times for benefits such as Medicaid, SNAP and child care assistance.

The report emphasizes the importance of a better coordinated system, suggesting in-person neighborhood services, simplified paperwork, and better communication about recertification deadlines, among other things. Changes to WIC during the pandemic that allowed remote enrollment were successful, increasing participation by 14% statewide.

“Improving the economic well-being of families is good for children and our community,” said Pete Nabozny, policy director at The Children's Agenda. The report argues for streamlined services and continued efforts to reduce child poverty in New York.
