SÃO PAULO – The Green Bay Packers will face the Philadelphia Eagles on Friday night with new signee Malik Willis as their backup quarterback after recalling only one player from the practice squad, running back Ellis Merriweather, for the game.

The Packers would have called up quarterback Sean Cliffford from the practice squad for the game if they weren't confident Willis could be the replacement. Willis was acquired in a trade with the Tennessee Titans last week and has only had a few practices with the team.

Merriweather's promotion is a concession to Emanuel Wilson (hip) and MarShawn Lloyd (thigh), whose participation is considered questionable.

Whether Wilson or Lloyd will play will not be announced until 90 minutes before the game, when the unavailable players are announced.

Merriweather has enough experience to execute the game plan and back up Josh Jacobs when needed. In the preseason, he was the second-best player behind Wilson with 26 carries for 99 yards.

The 6'1″, 220-pound Merriweather spent the final nine weeks of the regular season and both 2023 postseason games on the Packers' practice squad. He entered the league in 1923 as an undrafted free agent with the New Orleans Saints.
