“KAOS” Season 2: Netflix renewal status and what we know so far

“KAOS” Season 2: Netflix renewal status and what we know so far

One of the biggest turnarounds in Netflix UK's history arrived over the summer in the form of a modern retelling of Greek mythology starring Jeff Goldblum. Has Netflix renewed or cancelled? KAOS for a second season? How well is the series doing and what can we expect from future episodes?

Netflix has been pretty clever about naming the first seasons of shows lately, leaving out any identifying season number. But make no mistake: KAOS is designed to be a multi-season series, especially considering that Episode 8 puts a lot of effort into setting up the next episodes. If you watched until the end, you've no doubt come to the same conclusion.

KAOS Status and forecast for the renewal of season 2

Our renewal forecast
Cancellation expected

As of September 6, Netflix has not officially renewed or canceled the series, and unfortunately we believe it is likely to be canceled (albeit with a cautious prediction), as early top 10 rankings were well below our expectations for a series of this size and cost.

The creator has also stated that he would like to do more seasons in the future. Speaking to Cosmopolitan, Charlie Covell said, “I think anything is possible,” adding, “My dream was three seasons. I have a lot of ideas and a clear vision of what I want to do with them.”

Covell has apparently acknowledged that the series can at least be watched on its own if it is not renewed. “I also didn't want to do an ending that was a total cliffhanger. I hope that it feels satisfying as a standalone first season, and there's always hope for more. Because I would really love to do more and work with these actors and this team. It was a bit of a dream come true.”

How well is Kaos performing so far?

As with all renewals, audience numbers are ultimately what matters and are the number one deciding factor. No amount of marketing can get people to come to the theater or stay until the end. Ultimately, this is how we have managed to predict some of the big cancellations in the past and as our prediction shows, the early numbers are not looking great.

Let’s start with the official global weekly top 10, in which KAOS debuted fourth on Netflix after four days of streaming.

The first broadcast was with 22.80 million hours of viewers, which equates to 3.4 million views. If we compare this with the four-day premieres of several other English-language shows, we can see KAOS is lagging behind and sitting at the bottom of the chart. For this reason alone, the show already seems to be in trouble, as it sits at the bottom of the chart where only lower budget shows, such as comedies, can justify a renewal. While KAOS is by far not the most expensive series in the Netflix library, but it's not cheap either considering Season 1 had numerous production delays and a stellar cast.

Since we're in week 2, we can check FlixPatrol to see if the series is growing in the daily top 10 in over 80 countries worldwide. From their data, we can see that the series will see a significant uptick in week two, thanks to a continued rise in top 10 positions in many regions, especially Europe. It's not behaving quite like Baby Reindeer did earlier this year, where it went through the roof on social media before dominating the Netflix charts for weeks, but there are signs of slow but steady growth.

What you can expect Chaos Season 2 if renewed

Warning: The following section contains spoilers. Please read on with caution!

Season 1, Episode 8 ends with several pieces on the chessboard being rearranged against Zeus and KAOS actually coming. In the end, he seems powerless because his vision that he can bleed comes true and the water feature that symbolizes his power has collapsed.

Let's recap where some of these chess pieces lie: Prometheus is no longer controlled by Zeus but sits on the throne in Olympus. Riddy, now rescued and back on Earth after spending much of this season in the Underworld, just met Cassandra, who informed her that she is now a prophet and must go to Ari and “free the living.”

Back in the underworld, Caeneus has a similar task: he frees the dead. Much to Hades' surprise, he is given the power to renew souls.

Having fulfilled her father's prophecy, Ari is now in charge of Crete and tells her mother that she will not rule for the gods. Instead, she makes a deal with the Trojans to rebuild Troy and destroy Mount Olympus. The season ends with Dionysus standing outside the palace and Hera using the telephone to give the order to gather the troops and make the guest bed.

Where things go next is really only known to Atropos, Lachesis and Clotho. However, we will likely see further moves against Zeus as Olympus becomes increasingly unstable. Hades, weakened by Zeus himself, will almost certainly lose control of the Underworld. As he hinted earlier in the season, if that happens, everything will fall apart.
