A Clinton Township man is charged with shooting his neighbor's dog, according to Macomb County authorities.

Andrae Jones, 43, was arraigned in court on Sept. 3 on four counts, including third-degree murder/cruelty to animals, a felony punishable by four years in prison, the Macomb County District Attorney's Office said in a news release Thursday.

It says Jones shot the dog, named Buddy, on Aug. 15 as he approached his property line. The news release did not specify where in the township the incident occurred. Messages were left Friday for spokespeople for the district attorney's office and township police, asking for more details.

Jones is also charged with aggravated weapons offense, negligent discharge of a firearm and intentional damage to property valued at more than $200 but less than $1,000. Both are misdemeanors, according to the prosecutor's press release.

“Under Michigan law, intentionally killing a dog is a crime punishable by four years in prison. The consequences of the defendant's actions go beyond the legal consequences. The family is now grieving the loss of a beloved family member. We will ensure that the defendant faces the consequences of his alleged actions,” District Attorney Peter Lucido said in the press release.

According to online court records, Jones pleaded not guilty during his arraignment in 41B District Court in Clinton Township.

No attorney was listed for him in online court records. According to the records, a request for a public defender was filed and he was represented at arraignment by an unidentified public defender.

A probable cause conference is scheduled for September 16.

Jones' bail was set at 10% of $20,000. The judge ordered that if Jones posts bail, he will not be allowed to have any contact with the dog's owners and will not be allowed to possess any firearms or ammunition, according to the prosecutor's and court's press release.

Jones was not listed in an online search of county jail inmates on Friday.
