No helmet: 17-year-old without helmet dies after his motorcycle skids on a flyover near AIIMS | Delhi News

New Delhi: A 17 years old Boy died when the bicycle he was riding crashed into a Transfer near AIIMS in south Delhi early Thursday. The boy, police said, was not wearing a helmet. A case has been registered and a detailed investigation is underway.
The minor was taken to Safdarjung Hospital by his two friends at around 5:45 am. He was found dead on arrival. Police received information about the incident from the hospital.
The police questioned the friends who were accompanying the boy. When questioned, they were unable to provide a plausible explanation for the accident. “They were travelling on two motorcycles. Neither the deceased nor his friend, who was sitting on the pillion seat, were wearing a helmet,” said a senior police officer.
The victim was identified as a resident of Devli in south Delhi. The friends told the cops that they were travelling from Inderpuri towards AIIMS Ring Road when the accident occurred. “They said that the motorcycle skidded on the Rajnagar flyover at around 5.20 am and fell on the road when the boy dozed off for a few seconds,” the senior cop added.
The police investigated the accident spot and found a damaged bike parked on the flyover. A case was subsequently filed under sections 281 (reckless driving or riding on public roads) and 106 (causing homicide by negligence) of the BNS. The body was handed over to the family, who then took it to their native village in UP.
The incident has once again underlined the importance of wearing a helmet when cycling. Recently, there have been several accidents involving helmetless Cases of riders have surfaced. Last week, there was an incident in Lajpat Nagar where two men on a motorcycle died in a similar manner. Police suspect that they too were not wearing helmets.
Between January 1 and May 15 this year, a shocking 44% increase in traffic tickets against two-wheeler riders without helmets was reported in Delhi, compared to the same period in 2023. This significant increase underscores the growing concern over helmet violations in the city.
According to Delhi Traffic Police data, 104,028 traffic offenders were booked between January 1 and May 15, 2024, compared to 72,313 during the same period in 2023. The increased special campaigns and routine checks have resulted in a significant increase in traffic tickets, highlighting the need for increased enforcement measures and awareness campaigns.
The five roundabouts with the highest number of traffic tickets issued in 2024 have been identified in Delhi. Rohini tops the list, followed by Model Town, Aman Vihar, Ashok Vihar and Nand Nagri. These areas recorded 5,288, 4,346, 4,296, 4,208 and 3,915 violations respectively.
