Jerry Dipoto will return to the Seattle Mariners as president of baseball operations in 2025, the Seattle Times reported.

The team, which had a 10-game lead in the American League West on June 18, enters this weekend's games 4 1/2 games behind the Houston Astros.

Manager Scott Servais was fired on August 22 after the team finished a road trip with a 1-8 record and a 20-33 loss.

Fans had called for both Servais and Dipoto to be removed from the team at the time, but the Times reported that the decision to keep the 56-year-old Dipoto for the 2025 season and possibly beyond had already been made, regardless of whether the Mariners qualified for the postseason.

The Times said general manager Justin Hollander and most of the executive staff would return.

The team has not commented on Dipoto's future since the report was released Thursday evening.

Since mid-June, the Mariners have been 27-30 and the Houston Astros 38-25, which led to the turnaround.

Dipoto joined the organization on September 28, 2015, when he took over as GM. Six years later, he was promoted to President of Baseball Operations, with the Mariners making one postseason appearance during that time.

Under new coach Dan Wilson, who replaced Servais, Seattle is 7-6, with all six losses coming by one point.

The Mariners open a three-game series against the Cardinals in St. Louis on Friday. They have three more games against the Astros from September 23-25.
