Man convicted of attempted murder after stabbing in Upstate University Hospital emergency room

Syracuse, NY – A man was sentenced to prison Friday for attempted murder after stabbing another man in the emergency room of Upstate University Hospital.

Sabier S. Young, 44, pretended to be hit by a car in the hospital parking lot on Jan. 9, District Attorney William Fitzpatrick previously said. He was brought to the emergency room in a wheelchair, which allowed him to bypass the metal detectors, he said.

Young stabbed a man who was also in the waiting room shortly before noon, Fitzpatrick said. The victim's daughter was present during the stabbing.

The victim had multiple stab wounds on the right side of his abdomen, according to court documents. He was treated at Upstate and survived the attack.

On Friday, Judge Gordon Cuffy sentenced Young to 12 years in prison for attempted second-degree murder. He was also sentenced to seven years for second-degree assault and one year for endangering the welfare of a child. The sentences will be served concurrently.

Young did not speak at the sentencing. His lawyer, Paul Carey, said Young has suffered from mental health problems, including schizophrenia, since he was 14 and requested that he receive psychiatric treatment in prison.

Cuffy responded that he had already notified the Commission of Correction to have psychiatric resources made available to Young.

Following the attack, hospital officials tightened security measures, including requiring all patients to be screened for weapons and offering additional training to security staff.
