A 29-year-old man was taken into custody after an alleged break-in at a junkyard Wednesday morning. The suspects then rammed a patrol car, sparking a 15-mile chase through south Denver that included shots fired at police and ended in a park near Cherry Creek High School.

During the chase, five or six shots were fired, Douglas County Sheriff Darren Weekly said. The suspect – Brenton Zeiler of Aurora – surrendered after a standoff at Village Greens Park in Greenwood Village. Officers recovered a 9 mm handgun with a 32-round magazine that had been thrown over a fence.

Zeiler is expected to face attempted murder charges, Weekly told reporters at the scene. Douglas County Sheriff's officials were pursuing two other suspects.

Early Wednesday around 2:38 a.m., officers were notified of the suspected break-in at the junkyard in Highlands Ranch near Blakeland Drive and Highway 85. The suspects broke through a fence and rammed a patrol car, authorities said. The officer inside the car sustained injuries but continued to struggle with the suspects. The suspects fled along Belleview Avenue. A trailer they were pulling came loose from the hitch and crashed.

The MP was treated and released from hospital and is expected to recover.

Englewood police joined the pursuit and also came under fire after shots were fired from the fleeing suspect's vehicle, Weekly reported.

“If you shoot a police officer, we will get you,” he said.

Two unidentified suspects who fled on foot could not be found Wednesday morning and are believed to have fled the area, Weekly said. “We are very fortunate that none of our officers were hit.”
