How to watch, start time and forecast

The Chargers begin their new era against the opponent that ended their last one.

After an embarrassing 42-point loss to the Oakland Raiders last December that led to the firing of Brandon Staley, new head coach Jim Harbaugh will make his debut against the AFC West rivals at SoFi Stadium on Saturday. Aside from Harbaugh's ubiquitous khakis, almost nothing seems certain about the new Chargers.

Quarterback Justin Herbert is working with new running backs and receivers behind an offensive line that will start with rookie Joe Alt at tackle. The former No. 5 pick will be welcomed to the NFL by Raiders star edge rusher Maxx Crosby. The defense is facing a reboot under former Michigan defensive coordinator Jesse Minter.

The Chargers allowed 63 points in last year's loss, allowing Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce to secure the starting spot, and safety Derwin James Jr. hasn't forgotten that. He had his eye on this season's opening game as soon as he received the schedule.

“It's Raiders week,” James said. “That means a lot more.”

How to watch and listen to Chargers vs. Raiders

Betting odds for Chargers vs. Raiders

Who will win the game?

Thuc Nhi Nguyen’s choice: Maybe it's the new rhythm, the excitement of the new year, but the Chargers seem to have real energy at the start of the Harbaugh era. Although there are unknowns everywhere, the team still knows what it has in Justin Herbert. Chargers 24-21

Sam Farmer’s choice: Jim Harbaugh's team will be tougher than last season and more balanced with an improved running game. Which receiver will prevail? The Raiders are OK at quarterback, but are working on their weaknesses. Chargers 24, Raiders 18
