Congress central leadership will decide whether Vinesh and Bajrang will contest the election: Haryana Congress spokesperson

Chandigarh (Haryana) [India]September 6 (ANI): Before wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia join the Congress, Haryana Congress spokesperson Kewal Dhingra said the party's central leadership will decide whether they will contest the elections by considering factors such as probability of winning.

Kewal Dhingra said, “Today they (Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat) will join the Congress at the residence of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge. The central and state leadership of the BJP stood behind Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. The international players were humiliated at the Jantar Mantar in Delhi. They were victims of torture and ill-treatment. The central leadership of the party will decide whether they will contest the elections, considering factors like probability of winning.” He further said that during the ten-year rule of former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, 750 sportspersons were elevated to high positions.

Wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia are expected to meet Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge at his residence in Delhi, followed by an official meeting at the party headquarters on Friday.

According to sources, Bajrang Puniya will not contest the assembly elections. He is likely to be appointed as the co-chairman of the Haryana Congress campaign committee for the Haryana assembly elections and Vinesh Phogat will contest the election. Their seat will be finalized by the evening.

On Wednesday, Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia met Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi in the capital.

Elections in Haryana will be held on October 5. Votes will be counted on October 8.

At the Paris Olympics, Vinesh was disqualified from fighting for the gold medal in the 50kg category after she was found to be 100 grams overweight. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) also rejected her bid for the shared silver medal. On August 8, a day after her disqualification, she announced her retirement from wrestling. Since her return home, there has been intense speculation that she would enter active politics like her cousin Babita, a BJP MP. (ANI)
