School fire in Kenya: 17 students killed and 13 severely burned; investigations ongoing

A fire broke out at a school dormitory in Kenya, killing 17 students and leaving 13 others severely burned, according to police reports on Friday (September 6). Authorities fear the death toll could rise as more than a dozen injured students have been hospitalized with severe burns.

The incident occurred at Hillside Endarasha Primary School in Nyeri County and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

President William Ruto described the fire as “horrific” and “devastating.” He ordered a thorough investigation into the incident and said in a social media post: “Those responsible will be held accountable.”

Police said a team of investigators had been sent to the school. Police spokeswoman Resila Onyango told AFP that the bodies recovered were “burnt beyond recognition.” She also said that more bodies may be discovered as the investigation continues.

The Kenya Red Cross is providing psychosocial support to the affected students, teachers and families. A tracing service has also been set up at the school.

Fires in boarding schools are not uncommon in Kenya. In 2017, ten students died in a fire at Moi Girls High School in Nairobi. Over 20 years ago, 67 students died in the worst school fire in Kenya's history in Machakos County.
