Sources: Trump will attend oral arguments on Friday in E. Jean Carroll's appeal against the conviction

Former President Donald Trump is expected to appear in court on Friday to begin his appeal of a 2023 ruling holding him responsible for the sexual abuse of columnist E. Jean Carroll, according to sources familiar with his plans.

In May 2023, a jury found Trump guilty of assault and defamation in the E. Jean Carroll case.

Carroll, who filed the lawsuit in November 2022, claimed that Trump defamed her in a 2022 Truth Social post by calling her allegations a “hoax and a lie” and saying, “That woman is not my type!” when he denied her claim that Trump raped her in a Bergdorf Goodman dressing room in the 1990s.

The former Elle magazine columnist added a charge of assault under a New York law that allows adult victims of sexual abuse to sue their alleged attacker regardless of the statute of limitations. Trump has denied all allegations that he raped or defamed Carroll.

The jury awarded Carroll a total of $5 million in the lawsuit. The jury concluded that Trump did not rape Carroll, but sexually assaulted her, and awarded her $2 million in compensatory damages and $20,000 in punitive damages for the assault.

The jury awarded $1 million in compensatory damages, $1.7 million in goodwill, and $280,000 in punitive damages for defamation.

Trump called the verdict “a disgrace” after it was announced, and a spokesman for the former president announced that he would appeal.

“I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA WHO THIS WOMAN IS,” he posted on his platform Truth Social. “THIS VERDICT IS A SHAME – A CONTINUATION OF THE BIGGEST WITCH HUNT OF ALL TIME!”

“Make no mistake, this entire sham case is a political endeavor aimed at President Trump because he is now an overwhelming favorite to be re-elected President of the United States,” a Trump spokesman said in a statement after the ruling. “This case will be appealed, and we will ultimately win.”
