The three-part miniseries is about the infamous interview with Prince Andrew in 2019. A trailer for the series has now been released.

After Netflix attracted attention in the spring with a film on the same topic, Amazon Prime Video followed right behind. The series “A Very Royal Scandal” tells the story and explores the background of the well-known BBC interview between journalist Emily Maitlis (Ruth Wilson) and the British Prince Andrew (Michael Sheen). The release date is September 19th.

Background of the series “A Very Royal Scandal”

“One night. One hour. An interview that shook the world” reads the short description. This of course refers to the serious consequences that later caused Andrew to disappear from the public eye.

As early as March 2011, Andrew was under heavy criticism in the media because he had connections with sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. He spent long periods of time on Epstein's island, which was an alleged location for sexual acts with minors. Virginia Giuffre, a victim of the sex trafficking ring of Jeffrey Epstein and his wife Ghislaine Maxwel, also spoke out. As minors, she was forced by Maxwel and Epstein to have sex with Andrew and filed a lawsuit against the prince.

After Epstein was charged for his crimes, he died in custody in 2019. The circumstances of his death sparked a judicial scandal because he had not yet been convicted for his crimes. There are many theories on the Internet about foul play.

Trailer shows different perspectives

The series will probably show different perspectives. Both Maitlis' and Prince Andrew's views will be shown in the trailer. It will focus primarily on the setting and the backstory of the interview. The effects will also be touched upon in the trailer, although this part will be kept rather brief.

The interview that destroyed Andrew

A few months after Epstein's death, Andrew agreed to give an interview to the BBC about his connections with Epstein, the sex trafficking allegations and his relationship with Giuffre. What followed was a PR disaster for the royal, who was forced to resign from all royal duties shortly afterwards.

“A Very Royal Scandal” is produced by Blueprint Television for Amazon MGM Studios and distributed worldwide by Sony Pictures Television. You can see more about the series and the cast here.
