Man charged after stabbing 201 Poplar inmates to death in 2023, records show

SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. (WMC) – A Shelby County grand jury has indicted a man in connection with the 2023 stabbing death of an inmate.

The incident occurred in October of last year; Donnie Clay, 21, was accused of stabbing and killing an inmate, Deion Byrd, 21, at 201 Poplar.

According to court documents, Byrd was handcuffed and waiting to be taken back to jail when the altercation between him and Clay occurred.

Clay was charged with first-degree murder and possession of contraband on September 3.
