State police SWAT shot and killed armed man barricaded in Lincoln City home after suspect fired shots at local police officers from a dilapidated school bus

Early Thursday morning, state police SWAT officers shot and killed an armed man barricaded in a Lincoln City home after local police pursued the suspect after he fired at officers from a dilapidated yellow school bus.

According to authorities, the shooting was followed by a police pursuit of the suspect's old bus, gunfire from the bus, a foot chase along the beach, an armed barricade of the house and a house fire.

Someone on the old school bus with the Washington license plate had fired at least one shot at local police who were approaching the bus to investigate a parking complaint.

The bus was traveling north and was found abandoned in the parking lot of the Sea Gypsy Motel on Highway 101. According to Lincoln City police, the suspect reportedly fled on foot along the beach.

State police dogs helped track the suspect to the home on the corner of NW 19th Street and Jetty Avenue, about a block from the beach, Wednesday night. Other residents of the home said they knew the suspect had left the home when police surrounded it.

The Oregon State Police SWAT team also responded to assist local officers as neighbors were told to stay in their homes and away from their windows because there was a “potentially armed and dangerous individual” nearby.

Nearby residents said they heard police using loudspeakers throughout the night trying to force someone out of the house with their hands raised.

At around 5 a.m., a resident who wished to remain anonymous said she was awakened by what sounded like an explosion, “then there was a brief pause” and several gunshots.

Local resident Nader Farhat said he noticed police surrounding a house about a block away from him early Wednesday evening.

Sometime between 3:45 a.m. and 4:00 a.m. Thursday, he heard loud “lightning strikes” followed by several gunshots. He said the house where the shooting occurred burned down.

“This is a sleepy town built on tourism,” he said. “It's a sad situation.”

This is a developing story that will be updated.
