Coral Springs woman said she was “at her wits' end” when she murdered her husband, cops say

CORAL SPRINGS, Florida. – A Coral Springs woman told investigators she killed her husband in their home over Labor Day weekend due to infidelity, according to court documents released Thursday.

One of Denise and Rohan Malcolm's 14-year-old twin sons saw his father bleed to death on his bedroom floor after being shot multiple times, police said. Rohan Malcolm, 52, was still alive at the time and holding his shoulder, but his wife told investigators she fired one final shot, killing him, as police arrived, an arrest report said.

Denise Malcolm, 45, would be arrested for first-degree murder.

According to Coral Springs police, the murder occurred Saturday night at the family's home at 10501 NW 43rd St.

Authorities said one of the couple's sons called 911 shortly after 6:30 p.m. to report that his father had been shot in the shoulder and was still alive. Authorities said Rohan Malcolm suffered multiple gunshot wounds.

One of the twins told investigators that he was “alone in his bedroom, eating Chinese food and listening to music with headphones when he suddenly heard two or three loud bangs.”

According to the police report, he “ran out of his room” and saw his mother “standing in the doorway with a gun in her hand.”

“He looked into the bedroom and saw (his father) bleeding from his shoulder,” the report said. “Denise told him to leave the area, so he went into the kitchen and called emergency services from his (redacted) cell phone.”

Two Coral Springs police officers who arrived “took cover outside the house and began giving loud verbal commands to the residents to leave the building,” the report said.

The twins came out and “were taken to safety,” police said. As they were giving further instructions, “officers heard a loud bang” from inside the house; they believed the sound to be “a gunshot,” the report said.

In an interview with investigators, Malcolm described the shot as fatal, the report said. Authorities said she described in detail why she decided to pull the trigger.

“For the past two years, (Rohan) had been unfaithful, which led to the breakdown of their (marriage),” police wrote in the report. “As a result, they slept in separate bedrooms and frequently got into heated verbal arguments. She did not trust him and was at her wits' end with his lies and deception.”

One of those arguments ended with her killing him, police said. The two had returned from a shopping trip to get supplies for a planned Labor Day barbecue when Rohan Malcolm “unexpectedly announced that he was leaving to go to Port Saint Lucie with his friends,” the report said.

“Denise, believing that (he) was lying and actually wanted to see his (redacted) documents, became angry and began arguing with him,” the report states. “Denise and (Rohan) engaged in a heated verbal argument that lasted between 45 minutes and an hour and culminated in Denise's anger.”

Authorities said she went into the closet in her bedroom, pulled out a handgun and loaded a round into the chamber. The report says she then stood in the doorway and shot her husband multiple times.

“She locked the bedroom door and planned to kill herself after (Rohan's) death,” the report said. “While she was having suicidal thoughts, (he) was bleeding from the gunshot wounds he had sustained. Denise recounted that (her husband) said something to her that caused her to stop her suicidal thoughts and shoot him one final time.”

Malcolm told investigators her husband “was no longer alive after the last shot,” the report said. She was later arrested.

As of Thursday, Malcolm has been held without bail at the Broward Sheriff's Office's Paul Rein Detention Facility in Pompano Beach.

According to online records, no court hearings had been scheduled as of Thursday.
